About Us

‘Faanoos’ (‘The Lantern’) is a registered independent non-governmental and nonpolitical publication that was established in October 2005.

Faanoos’ vision is a democratic Afghanistan based on human rights values and rule of law. Its mission is informing, educating and entertaining the youth; raising awareness, advocacy, civic education, promoting democratic and human rights values, and youth capacity development.

Faanoos’ vision for itself is to be the most reliable youth media organization through its dedication and professionalism in promotion of citizen journalism and debating based on democratic and human rights values.

Faanoos is published in Dari, Pashto and English. In the nine years since its establishment, ‘Faanoos’ has taken great steps in reaching its audience in different locations inside and outside Afghanistan. Its annual readership is about 70,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 35 years old a year.

The magazine has achieved this without the support of international organizations or donors over the first three years. The editorial board aims to expand its readership in the long term primarily through its own effort and through engaging Afghan youth in the future.

‘Faanoos’ is distributed to magazine retailers across Afghanistan; and outside the country in Pakistan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, UK, and in the United States through mail.

The editorial board is led by magazine’s founder, Waheed Ahmad Jalalzada. Children and youth write many of their own articles for the magazine.
